Deck Commerce Customers See 15% Lift in GMV Over Black Friday Weekend

December 5, 2023

St. Louis, MO:

This Black Friday weekend was one for the record books. According to Adobe Analytics, Black Friday online sales came in at a record $9.8 billion, up 7.5% from 2022, and Cyber Monday saw a 9.6% increase in spending reaching $12.4 billion.

Retailers leveraging Deck Commerce, a leading order management system for direct-to-consumer retailers, reported a 15% increase in GMV year over year on Black Friday Weekend. Thanks to seamless shopping experiences, automated order processes, and zero technology down time, Deck Commerce customers continue to see strong performances each holiday season.

2023 Holiday Shopping Trends

  1. Cyber “Month” is here to stay. Shoppers purchased earlier in 2023 than in 2022, shifting some holiday spend to earlier in the month. We’ve seen this trend over the past 3 years and it looks like it’s here to stay.  Deck Commerce customers saw 40% of November sales occur before Thanksgiving.

  2. Ecommerce wins big.  Online Black Friday sales increased 8% while in-store sales only increased by 1.1% according to Mastercard SpendingPulse.

  3. Deferred payments. While people are buying more, they are still budget-conscious with many leaning on deferred payments to purchase big-ticket items. Overall, buy now pay, later financing was up 47% compared to last year—making it more important than ever to provide customers with alternative payment methods.

  4. Some industries came out on top. The best-selling categories on Black Friday were consumer electronics (especially smartwatches and televisions), the apparel industry and toys and gaming.

  5. Consumers are still budget conscious. While average order volume was up nationally, average order value was down. This means that while shoppers were buying, they were more cognizant of price. Heavy discounting by brands also played a major role here.

With external factors continuing to challenge direct-to-consumer brands, it’s more important than ever to create unparalleled shopping experiences to nurture loyal customers. That’s where an order management system comes in.

The Deck Commerce OMS enables brands to expose more sellable inventory, offer multiple payment options and high-value loyalty programs, and provide shoppers with convenient, omnichannel fulfillment options. Plus, by automating order processes, retailers can focus their time and effort on serving their customers well.
